FAQs

What is the counselor-to-camper ratio?

It is 1:5 on a regular day and 1:4 on field trip days, as a couple of staff members attend trips.

Who are the staff?

We interview all qualified applicants (we are an EEO establishment). Once hired, they receive extensive training prior to the arrival of campers, including health and safety, diversity and inclusion, emergency procedures, activity and outdoor program skills, and more. All staff members are First Aid and CPR trained.

What does a typical day look like?

The earliest time for drop-off is 7:30am. We start scheduled activities at 9:00am, reviewing rules and preparing campers for a morning trip to the park. They will return around 11:30am for lunch. We provide quiet time after lunch; children can nap or read during this time. Mid-afternoon, there is a pre-planned activity, such as a craft or structured game. Afterwards, we have snack time. Then we conclude the day with open play. We contract a school bus for all off-site trips.

Please note, this is a typical day; there are adjustments for field trip days and rainy days.

We provide a specific itinerary for the week. It will be distributed via email on the Friday before your child’s week of camp.

What is the latest morning drop-off and evening pick-up time?

Due to program and lunch schedules, and park adventures, we ask that you drop off your child by 9:00 am each morning to avoid delays in activities unless otherwise discussed. If you need to drop off your child later, please call the office, as it will be your responsibility to deliver your child to the current group’s location.

The last pickup for camp is 5:30 pm. There is a 15-minute grace period, as we understand traffic can be inconsistent; however, this should not happen frequently, as our staff are scheduled to leave at 5:30 pm. After 5:45pm, you will incur late fees that must be paid.

What if I need to drop my child off late or pick them up early?

As stated above, if you need to drop off your child late, please call the office as it will be your responsibility to deliver your child to the current groups location.

If you need to pick up your child early, please inform the Camp Director by phone, email, or in person on the day of pickup. Please call the office before traveling here if your camper is off-site, so we can provide their current location.

What if my child needs medication?

If your child needs over-the-counter (OTC) medicine, you must come to administer the required dosage. If your child needs prescribed medicine, a form must be filled out and given to the Camp Director and the medicine will be placed in a locked box. When prescribed medicine needs to be administered, the child will see the Camp Director.

Do field trips cost extra?

Field trips fees are included in your registration fee. Field trips are predominantly on Fridays and are a full day of camp (9am-5pm); however, some field trips may occur on other days, or the schedule may change. Campers can bring extra money on field trip days for souvenirs and snacks.

Are lunches provided?

Your camper will need to bring their lunch every day in a bag, small lunch box, etc. They will not be refrigerated. Your child is welcome to bring a water bottle to fill up throughout the day, but it is their responsibility to keep up with it.

Additionally, please pack a snack for snack time.

What is the cancellation and refund policy?

Summer Camp Refunds will not be granted after the second week of camp concludes (June 12th, 2026). Kernersville Parks and Recreation does not issue refunds once camp has begun and the spot cannot be filled. Refunds will not be given for any day a child is absent from the program. Refund requests submitted before June 12, 2026, must be sent to the Camp Director at least one week in advance. If extenuating circumstances force you to miss camp outside the refund time frame, you may request a refund in writing. This will be submitted to the Director of Parks and Recreation for review. If approved, you will receive 80% of the total amount paid to date.

What if my child gets overstimulated during the day?

We have a Quiet Room with sensory friendly tools for them to decompress. The staff will check on them at ten minute intervals.

What are the rules around Swim Days?

We normally swim on Wednesdays at a local neighborhood pool with lifeguards. Your camper will need to arrive at camp in their swimwear, towel, and sunscreen already applied. If your child isn’t a strong swimmer, they may bring flotation devices, but they must keep track of them.

For water park field trips, before children enter the pool, the lifeguards will require all children to take a swim test. If they do not pass, they will be restricted to certain areas of the pool.

Can my child bring extra money?

Yes, you can provide extra money for vending machine snacks and/or field trip purchases BUT it is your child’s responsibility to keep up with it. We provide all campers with a money pouch to keep their funds in.

Can my child bring electronics, safety blankets/animals, trading cards, etc.?

No, we foster your child with a full day of activities to keep them engaged and comfortable. Additionally, to avoid items being stolen or misplaces, we are not responsible for keeping track of them.
