This year we will start off with a big project on our list, a new Recreation Center! Before we can think of opening the doors we have to start at square one: gathering public input. As a Recreation Department we strive to provide quality experiences for our citizens, and we would love to provide a building with amenities you need and want.

Construction Updates

Latest Status as of June 2024:

The building is 82% complete! The parking lot is graded and curbed, once landscaping is complete they will begin paving. The windows are almost completely installed. The ceiling tiles, wood floor and ceramic tiles are all in process. The Sports equipment, elevator and epoxy flooring is complete. We are on schedule for a Late Fall/Early Winter completion date.

Drop-In Input Session

Our next big draw to the public will be on Thursday January 23rd 2:00pm-7:00pm at Fire Station 42 off NC-66.

Kiosk Input

To gather as much input as possible we will have an interactive station as well, where you are able to vote on amenities that have been continuously brought up throughout the various sessions. This is to capture as much input as possible, we encourage you to visit the recreation center when you have time, the station only takes 3-5 minutes to complete. It will be here from January 21-February 8, 9:00am-8:00pm. The Recreation Center is located at 125 East Bodenhamer St.

Initial Input Sessions

Apart from hosting general meetings, we like to collect data from entities with similar focus and/or goals in collective group meetings.  We have identified six themes for these focus groups: Citizen Advisory, Civic/Nonprofit, Community Service, Athletics, Instructors & Participants (these focus group sessions were hosted between January 15-January 16) and Elected Official & Staff (hosted on February 10). These groups were instructed to answer questions that prompted them to think of amenities and situations to clarify what they would utilize most in a new Recreation Center.
