Recreation Department Updates

Parks, Recreation Center

We have a handful of projects, in various stages! Here is an update for you.

Civitan Fitness Park

We are so excited for all the progress we have made – it has been a long time coming. The park has been renovated with a focus on fitness to encourage the community to embrace health and wellness. It is located at 309 Nelson St, behind the fire station. All of our patience is rewarded with our Opening Ceremony Saturday May 13th. We commence the event at 9:30am with opening remarks by the Mayor, Parks & Recreation Director and Civitan Club member. We will then have demonstrations at each of the elements. We’ve run into a few delays so we won’t be able to officially open the park to the public after the event but, we look forward to seeing you and showing off the progress we have made. Make sure to save the date in your calendar!

Fourth of July Park – Court Resurfacings

The weather has warmed up so that means we are able to resurface the basketball court and tennis courts. We have heard the comments on the cracks and leaning poles, so we have set aside funds to address those concerns. We have set a start date of June 5th, and the timeframe to complete it is dependent upon favorable weather. Don’t fret though as the tennis courts, pickleball courts, and basketball court at Civitan Fitness Park will be open during this time. We will keep you updated about when they will open back up, as our Carolina weather makes the reopen date variable.

Recreation Center Groundbreaking

June will host a monumental event for the parks and recreation department – the Groundbreaking Ceremony & Concert for the future Kernersville Community Recreation & Event Center. We started collecting public input back in early 2021, and we presented the board with the plan in late 2021 that was approved. Through various meetings, the approved concept was formalized into construction documents and we are ready to start building. Stay tuned for more details.

Once we start progressing on the new center, we will update the Recreation Center Planning Page.
